SNAP/EBT FAQs

Q: What is SNAP and EBT?

A: SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is the largest federal nutrition assistance program in the country. Aiding low-income individuals and families, SNAP works with an EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card, which is like a debit card that purchases SNAP eligible food and drinks.

Q: What items are NOT eligible with EBT?

A: Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, and tobacco are not eligible. Neither is any item that has a Supplement Facts label – i.e. vitamins, medicines and supplements. Foods that are hot at the point of sale or any live animals aside from shellfish, fish removed from water and any animals slaughtered prior to pick-up from the store aren’t eligible with EBT. Neither are any nonfood items like pet foods, hygiene items, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, paper products or other household supplies.
